"BBC iPlayer wins Nick Pierce Seal of Approval"

Seal of Approval

The BBC have released a new version of the iPlayer desktop application and website, and I must say that I am impressed how many optical carcinogens have been eradicated in this release.

The desktop application is quite stunning, and hasn’t suffered from the glitchy sloppy UI of its predecessor.  The UI is both more attractive and informative, providing download speed and time left indicators when downloading a film and showing the exact date the application thinks a downloaded program will expire.  I know I’ve had a fair few program in the past suddenly wiped from my queue when I thought I had weeks left, which was quite annoying.

In other news, this is a good post about complexity in program, which suddenly veers off towards Javascript land, but does end up linking to this piece of mandatory reading on the mechanics of said script.
